ABOUT
ANDREW SPICE

Andrew Spice has made a nearly-unprecedented return to the music industry after 22 years. In 2003, his debut album Pretty Demons (Dead Daisy/Outside) earned rave reviews: “so sensitive it will break your heart” (The Varsity); “profound, beyond-Thom Yorke melancholy…a genuine talent whose lyrics are carefully wrought poems” (NOW Magazine); “between the loopy highs of Tori Amos and the degraded depths of Trent Reznor…with the talent on display on this album, I can see Andrew Spice one day reaching their status” (Swerve); “Spice manages to put his finger on our collective hearts” (The Toronto Star). He was nominated for an OutMusic Award, and shared stages with contemporaries such as Jason Collett (Broken Social Scene), Amy Millan (Stars), Emm Gryner, and Jann Arden.

Subsequently, Andrew’s path took an unusual turn: he earned a Ph.D. and became a clinical psychologist. He built a well-respected practice in Toronto, earning a reputation as a highly skilled and compassionate clinician. While continuing to practice psychology, creative inspiration unexpectedly struck again and Andrew returned to music. Andrew’s new album, With Animals, was produced by 2-time JUNO nominee Matthew Barber and features Grammy nominee Drew Jurecka. With Animals has garnered praise from the likes of Wonderland (“one of Canada’s brightest talents”), House of Solo (“this multi-talented artist delves deep into the complexities of anger, grief, and healing”), and FAULT (“tender, articulate, and raw, his voice has not only returned - it’s more powerful than ever”), as well as radio play on CBC, WXPN-FM, and campus stations. The album’s striking visuals have accumulated over 65 000 views, with standout video Terrible Date having been directed by Andrew’s husband, international drag artist Miss Moço. Like his very first songs, Andrew’s new music is devastatingly vulnerable with a queer male voice and piano at its centre. On With Animals, he plants his flag again - not as a nostalgic return, but a vital reintroduction.
